Winter Driving Requirements (Nov 1 – May 1)

Required: 4WD vehicle with snow tires.

Not permitted: Two-wheel drive vehicles, even with chains.

If you do not have 4WD with snow tires, you MUST arrange a shuttle.

⚠️ Colorado State Patrol and Routt County Sheriff’s Office strictly enforce traction laws. Tickets and liability apply if you cause an accident or become stuck without proper equipment.

The final two miles of the road are unpaved, steep, and winding, though they are regularly maintained. Please drive carefully, share the road with hikers and bikers, and respect all private landowners by obeying posted signs.

⚠️ Important:

Cables and straps are not acceptable substitutes for tire chains.

If you do not have proper equipment, please arrange transportation with one of the local shuttle companies.

Trail Access

Forest Service Trail 1169 (Hot Springs Trail) is open to hiking and biking from Elk River Road and Mad Creek Trailhead. Hikers MUST check in with the attendant upon arrival to pay admission fees.

Parking & Vehicles

Parking is very limited at the Hot Springs. For your convenience—and to avoid winter driving hazards—please consider using a shuttle service.

RVs and trailers are not permitted at any time.

Two-wheel drive vehicles are not allowed in winter.
